Since 2005 at the initiative of prominent American gerontologist Louis Lipschitz a new program has started called “The treatment of femoral neck fractures”. Fracture of the femoral neck is the main cause of death and disability of elderly people worldwide. A quarter of patients die within two months after injury, half in need of constant assistance. Of the tens of thousands of poor elderly Jews of Dnepropetrovsk each year about 35 patients are diagnosed this fracture. Unfortunately, the cost of drugs is significant and without assistance from the community most could not afford an effective treatment. Earlier this year a protocol on cooperation in the program was signed by the Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Shmuel Kaminetsky, a representative of the Jewish community of Greater Boston, Harvard Medical School professor, head of the Bet Yisrael Dikoness medical center L. Lipschitz, chief physician of the Mechnikov Hospital Professor Pavlov and Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of Dnepropetrovsk Medical Academy Alexander Loskutov. In less than a year of functioning of the program dozens of patients were operated on. People have returned to a full and healthy life and can move actively and take care of themselves, even dance. These people say in one voice: “The Dnepropetrovsk and the Boston Jewish communities gave us new lives”.
