Community history
For most of its two-century history Odessa was one of the largest Jewish centers in the world, and its community life was famous for completeness and variety. Unfortunately, 70 years of Soviet power have caused considerable damage to the Jewish community - the freedom of religion and national life were declared on paper but in practice were not feasible. Of course, in this time, some Jews tried to live a Jewish life, but it was fraught with enormous difficulties and dangers, and the observance of Jewish traditions often ended up in prison. However, since 1990, when the still-existing, but living their last days the Soviet government recognized the truly religious freedom and cultural autonomy, in Odessa began this Jewish renaissance. Over the years, the city created the organization and structure, almost entirely to the Jewish life cycle, and all the activities of the Jewish community of Odessa is just aimed at supporting each element of the Community mechanism in due course.
