Community history
Founded in 1784 with the annexation of Crimea to Russia, soon after it settled a few Jewish families from Galicia. In the early 19th century. Jews opened in Sevastopol shops and craft shops, began to supply food and other goods to the local garrison.
The plague which broke out in 1825, caused heavy damage to the community. In 1829 Emperor Nicholas I decreed that the Jews, except military personnel were ordered to leave within two years Sevastopol, which became the main naval base of Russia on the Black Sea. Local authorities have tried to abolish the imperial decree, arguing that the expulsion of the Jews will hurt the economy of Sevastopol, especially handicraft production and trade, but repeated application of Admiral A. Greig, the military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolayev, led only to the fact that the term of expulsion was postponed in 1832, then in 1833, and in 1834 the Jews finally expelled from the city.
Hundreds of Jews - soldiers and sailors - were among the participants in the defense of Sevastopol in September 1854 - August 1855 (during the Crimean War of 1853-56), Many of them died in battle. In 1864, on the northern side of the Jewish community has put a monument with the inscription "In memory of Jewish soldiers who died for their country in the defense of Sevastopol during the war of 1854-1855." (Now located at a military plant). In the British and French troops besieging Sevastopol, also served as the Jews, some of them are buried in English, French and so-called Brethren cemeteries Sevastopol.
After the war, some Jews returned to Sevastopol, the community was restored. In 1959 3116 Jews lived in Sebastopol, in 1970 - 3419, in 1979 - 3218. A small synagogue and Jewish cemetery remained in the town.
