Community history
In pre-war Krivoy Rog was a significant Jewish community, which numbered approximately 45 000 members, representing 25% of the population of the city.
Historically, the Jewish population of Krivoy Rog was concentrated in the old part of town. Over time, the Jewish beau monde formed, both technical and humanitarian.
By the resettlement sites and buildings Jewish culture and life geographically tended: synagogues, schools, cemeteries... Krivoy Rog had several synagogues, the main one being located at the Synagogue street (now Kaunasskaya street). Across the road in the courtyard was another smaller synagogue.
After the revolution, on the Pushkin street a Jewish school № 9 was located. As a result of Soviet government policy aimed at the total assimilation of the Jewish population the synagogue was closed and its building was taken. The school was closed as well. After the war, the synagogue was not returned to the Jewish community and on its foundations three-story apartment building was built.
It seemed that a cultural layer, a whole nation with its own traditions, customs, occupations, way of life disappeared forever. Nevertheless, the level of education of the Jewish population was quite high at all times. Unfortunately in Soviet times this formation could not be Jewish.
The revival of Jewish life in Ukraine, including in Krivoy Rog, began with the Ukraine’s independence. Various organizations started to open which purposes were to unite the Jews of the city and join the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
In 2002 Rabbi Liron Edery came to Krivoy Rog, a young Israeli. His first step - the opening of a Jewish school and kindergarten.
With the help of the Or-Avner Chabad Lubavitch World Foundation charitable aid to the poor is given on constant basis.
In 2004 it was decided to purchase land in the center of the city for the construction of the educational complex.
In addition, another site was purchased for the construction of the Choral Synagogue.
In 2006, construction of women's mikvah was initiated.
So we can say - the revival of Jewish life in the city started and gaining momentum. The community creates all conditions for the Jewish population and especially young people to have the opportunity to live a full Jewish life.
