Community history

Date of birth of the Jewish community of Khmelnitsky should be considered the year 1989.

Of the countless synagogues available in the past put into operation only four were returned (Proskurov, Kamenetz-Podolsk, Slavuta and Shepetovka). The religious communities were able to revive the life of each minyan. Indispensable role is played by the rabbis who came to the city. There are normal conditions for their work. However, the Khmelnitsky synagogue is deprived of basic conditions for normal operation.

There are five religious communities in Khmelnytsky region which carried out the necessary work. Over the years, the Jewish population of the area reduced significantly. Of course elderly people prevail in the community. Hesed appeared taking much of the work. Different languages and cultures complement each other and this diversity creates a special vital palette that exists now.

Jewish national organizations use different media in their work. Newspapers and radio of national and citywide importance do not refuse to broadcast Jewish programs.

There are veterans' organizations, who are alive not only by their memories but also actively participate in the life of Jewish community.

Jewish secondary school founded by Rabbi Y. Raskin works in town for the last 65 years. This school is a center of Jewish life for young people. And this is the future of the Jewish national community.
