History

The city was founded in 1571 and has a rich history. The city has emerged as the border town and later turned into a fortified suburb.

In 1783 the town became a chief town of the Ekaterinoslav province and renamed Bakhmut.

 

 

Since 1951 Artyomovsk Winery, largest in Europe, is operating, since 1954 - Metallurgical plants named after Erwin J. Quiring (now Artemovsk factory of non-ferrous metals) started its operation.
