
The tragedy occurred on January 11, 1942, when the Nazis closed more than 3 thousand people in a tunnel.
Bachmuth Residents of Donetsk region, which from 1924 to 2016 was called Artem, commemorated the victims of the tragedy in 1942, when during the occupation of the city more than three thousand people were buried alive by the Nazis in the tunnel. A memorial ceremony was held on January 11 on the day of the 75th anniversary of Bachmut "Babi Yar."
Protesters gathered at the scene. They lit candles and laid flowers to the monument, read the memorial prayer and paid tribute to the minute of silence.
The ceremony was attended by Director of the Museum of Local History Elena Smirnova, who shared the historical data of the tragedy, as well as the head of the department of the Bakhmut Donetsk Regional Charitable Foundation "Hesed Tzedakah" Heim Dubrov and Mayor Alex Reva.
"The extermination of the Jewish people during the Second World War - it's a national tragedy in Ukraine. It is necessary to speak and to tell that to future generation. To know the brutal truth of the war, to keep the memory of the victims, to protect monuments and memorials - it is our duty and our responsibility ", - said Reva.
Most of those who were killed in the day of the tragedy were Jews. In addition to them in the ranks of the Nazis' victims were Ukrainians and Poles. Out of all the dead only a few were recognized.
