Crimean authorities intend to demolish the remains of former buildings of a Simferopol hotel Astoria, which also previously housed the Jewish community, a printing house and a cinema. It is reported by the newspaper "Respublika", which is considered close to the authorities.

"The ruins of the buildings are a disgrace to the capital of Crimea and must no longer be there, - the chairman of the Council of Ministers of Crimea Anatoly Mogilev said. - I promise: till the end of the year a square or any other useful object which will decorate the city will be constructed on the site. What exactly - the Simferopol citizens will decide".

Crimean Prime Minister noted that prior to the demolition of the building "it must be sure that the facade has no historical value, then public hearings will take place, then a competition of architectural projects".

The former Astoria hotel buildings in Simferopol located on the Karl Marx St., 16, were built in the mid-1860s. Originally the house belonged to a merchant and editor-publisher of the newspaper called "Krymskiy Vestnik" S. Spiro, who settled down in it and organized the printing facilities of his newspaper. In 1910 in the building a movie theater was opened which in 1929 changed its name for the "Prozhektor" and in 1931 became known as "Kultfilm". It also housed the city Jewish community. After the war the building became a hotel and the restaurant called “Astoria”.
