The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine issued a new booklet for the holiday of Shavuot.
The booklet provides all the information about the holiday: its history, traditions, commandments, blessings.
The holiday of Shavuot is the day when Jews were given the Torah. On this day, standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, the Jews heard the 10 commandments.
This holiday has four titles:
First: "Shavuot" means "weeks" and consonant with the word "shvuot" - "oath." Shavuot is celebrated after seven weeks from the first day of Passover, that is - "weeks." At Mount Sinai Jews vowed to be loyal to G-d, and G-d vowed to them. That is the "shvuot" - "oath."
Second: "The Feast of the harvest," because it comes at a time of harvest.
The third title: "The Bikura Day - the first fruits," because on this day new offerings were brought to the Temple.
The fourth name - Atzeret (Assembly) was given by the wise men, because it is like the eighth day concluding the seven days of Passover and is closely associated with them. It goes on them and is their end. The count of Days of Omer between Passover and Shavuot do not split the holidays but connect them.
