Every city and town is unique in its own way. The history, beauty, unique architecture and generous soul of every city dweller made Chernovtsy have its own place in the registry of Ukrainian and European cities. Chernovtsy is one of the most beautiful cities of Ukraine.
Before this Pesach the teachers of the Ohr-Avner Chabad Jewish Culture Centre of Chernovtsy went for the excursion in the city with the Jewish children.
Chernovtsy is like a museum in which almost every street has its own peculiarities and secrets and architecture of various styles makes the city even more vivid and diverse.
During its history the city saw seven imperial epochs that left their traces in different spheres. That is why there are over 600 different historical and cultural memorials and monuments. 17 of them are under government protection.
The children visited the Chernovtsy Local History Museum and saw and found much new about the city. The museum collection has a collection of old printed editions, a wide collection of coins, a very interesting collection of weapons, wide archeological collection and etc.
Moreover the children saw the architectural and historical legacy of the large community of Jews which existed here during the 19-20 centuries. They saw the Jewish House at the Theatre Square, the big old synagogue and the hospital at the Barbusse Street, the houses for orphans, aged and poor Jews, family synagogues, prayer houses, the houses of the Jewish societies, Teunbihalle Educational Centre at the Turkish Street.
In 1877 the Jewish community got the main Temple in which the reformist Jews gathered for prayer. The Temple once was one of the most stylish religious buildings of Chernovtsy. Today this is the building of the Chernovtsy cinema. One can hardly guess that this once was a Jewish holy place.
The children were satisfied with this interesting excursion.
