
January 27th is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day in 1945 the soldiers of the First Ukrainian Front of the Soviet Army entered the territory of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The gates of the death camp were opened first by the assault team commander of the 100th Lvov Rifle Division, Major Anatoly Shapiro.
Memorial Day was established in 2005 on the initiative of the UN General Assembly.
Many commemorative events are associated to this special date, which take place in Israel, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States and other countries.
