Today is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27th is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day in 1945 the soldiers of the First Ukrainian Front of the Soviet Army entered the territory of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The gates of the death camp were opened first by the assault team commander of the 100th Lvov Rifle Division, Major Anatoly Shapiro.

Memorial Day was established in 2005 on the initiative of the UN General Assembly.

Many commemorative events are associated to this special date, which take place in Israel, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States and other countries.

28th of Tevet - Birthday of Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson



Today is the 28th of Tevet. On this day in 5640 (1880) in the city of Nikolayev the mother of the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson was born to this world. The Hasidim called Rebbetzin Chana - mother of the Jewish people. Her parents were Rabbi Meir Shlomo Yanovsky, who was the Rabbi of Nikolayev and rebbetzin Rachel, daughter of Rabbi Yitzhak Pushnich, rabbi of the city Dobrenko.

On the 13th of Sivan 5660 (June 10, 1900), she married Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson. In 5669 (1908) Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was appointed as rabbi of the city of Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro). Chassidim from around the world spent an inspiring Shabbos at the Alter Rebbe's Ohel in the Ukrainian town of Hadiach


Chassidim from around the world traveled to Ukraine last week to spend Shabbos at the Ohel resting place of the first Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, in the town of Hadiach.

Despite the bitter cold, guests enjoyed comfortable accommodations thanks to the fully furnished shul built on-site by the late philanthropist Sami Rohr OBM and a Hachnosas Orchim lodging building run by the Deitsch family.

With the 24th of Teves, the day of the Alter Rebbe's yartzeit, falling out on Sunday, some 450 men and even children made the trip to Ukraine from Israel, the United States.

The "Ukraine" palace will host the event for the Holocaust Remembrance day


January 27 at the small hall of the Kiev National Palace "Ukraine" a memorial ceremony "Six million hearts", dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be held.

The event will start at noon. The program is divided into three parts - music, theater and a memorial. As part of the memorial performances of government and public figures of Ukraine will be held.

In Kiev, commemorative events take place since January 27 every year, in 2012, Ukraine for the first time celebrated the International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the state level.



January 27, Lviv will honor the memory of Holocaust victims at the memorial rally and concert


January 27, Lviv will hold a memorial service and a requiem concert to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In the morning the participants of the funeral procession will lay wreaths at the monument to victims of the Lviv ghetto and hold interfaith prayers for those who were killed in the Valley of Death Yanovsky concentration camp.

By day the All-Ukrainian Jewish Charitable Foundation "Hesed-Arieh" will hold a ceremony in the Center of the Central Western European urban history "to remember the past for the future", and in the evening a memorial concert-requiem will be held at the Lviv Regional Philharmonic.

Dnipro city will host an exhibition by Luigi Toscano “Against forgetting”


In honor of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day the center "Menorah" will be the opening a photo exhibition by Luigi Toscano "Against Forgetting". The organizers are the museum "Memory of the Jewish people and the Holocaust in Ukraine," Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies "Tkumah" with the support of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany.

"Against Forgetting" - is a unique collection of stories of human destiny. Bahmut honored the memory of the Jews, who were buried alive by the Nazis


The tragedy occurred on January 11, 1942, when the Nazis closed more than 3 thousand people in a tunnel.

Bachmuth Residents of Donetsk region, which from 1924 to 2016 was called Artem, commemorated the victims of the tragedy in 1942, when during the occupation of the city more than three thousand people were buried alive by the Nazis in the tunnel. A memorial ceremony was held on January 11 on the day of the 75th anniversary of Bachmut "Babi Yar."

Protesters gathered at the scene. They lit candles and laid flowers to the monument, read the memorial prayer and paid tribute to the minute of silence.

International Menorah Lighting with Foreign Diplomats & Ukrainian Government Officials


Ambassadors, Foreign diplomats, Ukrainian Government Ministers and Kiev City officials joined the local and foreign Jewish business community at the annual Chanukah party and Menorah lighting hosted by Raphael and Devorah Rutman at the exclusive five star Intercontinental Hotel in the center of Kiev.

The evening, which fell on the fourth night of Chanukah, began with opening remarks by the host, Raphael Rutman. He thanked all of the participants for making the effort to come to spread the universal message of the Chanukah Lights.
